Regular meetings take place between the group’s leadership team and representative heads of the localvillages to establish, maintain and improve relationships offering the opportunity to strengthen collaboration. The group supports oil palm smallholders by training in better, more sustainable agricultural practices. Support to smallholder farmers is also provided to encourage these communities to diversity their food production and income with diverse agricultural products.
REA Kaltim also works with the local government and communities to develop a network of trained community groups to promote fire prevention and develop fire-fighting capabilities. Waste and recycling centres are operated in the housing areas of each estate and mills.
Conservation is at the core of REA Kaltim’s sustainability policies, with approximately 20,000 hectares set aside as conservation reserves within the group’s titled land bank.
Our Conservation objectives include: conserve or enhance the original values of the landscape; minimize negative impacts of human activities; and provide long term benefits for biological species, local communities and the group. Various technologies are used in systematically monitoring of the biodiversity in the group’s conservation reserves. A variety of Rare, Threatened and Endangered Species have been identified.
Satellingence in the Netherlands also provides land cover mapping to facilitate the group’s ability to monitor the status of forest cover and illegal land clearing.
REA Kaltim proactively collaborates with major universities in England (Cambridge University), USA (University of Ohio) and Indonesia (Mulawarman University and Universitas Nasional) along with international and local research institutions (eg SEARRP and BRIN) to provide access to research on biodiversity management, field biology and conservation.
Regular educational programmes for the local communities, schools and workers within the group’s emplacements are conducted to increase the knowledge and appreciation of conservancy.
Good relations and mutual respect between REA Kaltim and the communities impacted by our operations are of fundamental importance to ensure we are operating in a sustainable and efficient manner for all stakeholders.
Our strategy to empower the surrounding communities focus on improving: formal education opportunities (ie sponsorships); socio-economic independence programs; health services; construction of roads and other infrastructure. We also support various national and religious celebration activities conducted in the community.
