REA Kaltim Takes Home “Best HCVA Management” Award

PT REA Kaltim Plantations Awarded as Best Company Managing High Conservation Value Areas in Plantation Area

As part of R.E.A Holdings Plc which is engaged in oil palm plantations, PT REA Kaltim Plantations is aware of the importance of biodiversity, its habitat, social and cultural responsibility which must be maintained for business continuity and environmental sustainability. This includes conservation actions to use and maintain natural resources that are owned wisely so that they can continue to be used into the future. For PT REA Kaltim Plantations, this action is not a process that can be done instantly. Therefore, efforts and awareness are needed as early as possible to target and achieve this mission.

PT REA Kaltim Plantations has been doing this for years, in 2007, before other oil palm plantation companies started this initiative. Mrs. Suimah, as Head of Conservation at REAKON said, “All these activities are aimed at maintaining and increasing conservation values, preventing negative impacts from plantation operation activities and other disturbances such as animal attacks on settlements. This can occur due to loss of habitat, to the explosion of pest populations both in plantations such as rats and squirrels, or in society such as the appearance of the Macaca Fascicularis dan Macaca Nemestrina. This is also done to establish partnerships with various parties including the surrounding community, companies, related governments, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), and academics.”

Due to decades of commitment, on January 9, 2023, PT REA Kaltim Plantations was awarded the “Best Company Managing High Conservation Value Area in Plantation Area” in commemoration of the 66th Anniversary of East Kalimantan Province. At the same event, PT REA Kaltim Plantations also won two other awards, namely the best Livable House Program and Compliance of Paying Surface Water Tax.

This awards was also won due to the implementation of East Kalimantan Provincial Regulation No. 7 of 2018 Concerning Sustainable Plantation Development which accommodates the protection of HCV Areas (endangered animals and its habitat, environmental services, and socio-cultural) which are then detailed in the East Kalimantan Governor Regulation No. 12 of 2021 Concerning Criteria for HCV Areas and East Kalimantan Governor Regulation No. 43 of 2021 Concerning Management of High Conservation Value Areas in Plantation Areas.

In 2022, 360 species were recorded in the conservation area of PT REA Kaltim Plantations & Group in 6 classes, namely 47 species of mammals, 148 species of aves, 32 species of reptiles, 33 species of amphibian, 50 species of lepidoptera, and 40 species of pisces. As stated by Mrs. Suimah, “In addition to environmental and socio-cultural services, the number of species recorded is part of the evaluation in obtaining this award and submitted in periodic reports.”

Through this achievement, PT REA Kaltim Plantations will continue to be committed to and maintain smallholder partnerships in managing their own oil palm plantations with sustainable practices.
